Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Egmore, established in 1819, is one of the oldest eye hospitals in the world and the first in Asia dedicated exclusively to ophthalmology. It is now known as the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital (RIO-GOH) and functions under the Directorate of Medical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.
